Use for Drones
Every first response agency has discussed numerous uses for drones in the first response setting. This data was not surprising but there were common themes:
1) Search and Rescue
2) Hazmat
3) Wildfire monitoring
4) Early scene awareness
Barriers to Drone Use
SkyReach data has also identified common reasons why first response agencies have not adopted this technology. Cost was number one by far but respondants were asked to elaborate.
1) Personnel training / expertise
2) Regulatory hurdles
3) Not a clear use*
4) No agency said no to trialing a drone program
*Additional data showed this response was common in older EMS/Fire department leaders then younger leaders.
Operational Integration
SkyReach also asked questions about what the integration of drones into the current operational structure would look like and many of the responses shared the same result.
Integrating drones will depend on the buy in of the crews. The younger crew members will have less of an issue with the integration. It was also noted that many agencies said they would like a trial phase to find issues with the depolyment and correct them in the early stages.
